Russian Empire 5 Ruble Assignat, 1816 (1786-1819 Period)

Style

The assignat features a simple, utilitarian design typical of Russian paper currency from the late 18th and early 19th centuries. It is monochromatic blue, with text as the primary design element. The denomination 'ПЯТЬ' is centrally located within an ornate rectangular frame, providing a visual focal point. Serifs are used for the main text, while the serial numbers are in a sans-serif font. The overall impression is one of functionality over elaborate artistic detail, focusing on clear communication of its value and issuing authority.

Description

This is a 5 Ruble assignat issued by the Russian Empire, dated 1816. Assignats were the first paper currency of Russia, introduced in 1769. The 1786-1819 emission series, to which this note belongs, was a major issue that standardized the design and significantly increased the volume of paper money in circulation. This particular 5 Ruble note is characterized by its distinctive blue color, which was used for this denomination to help prevent counterfeiting and allow for easier identification by the public. The obverse side (shown) features the denomination 'ПЯТЬ' (FIVE) prominently, flanked by the serial numbers '№ 1951216' at the top and bottom. The text states that the State Assignat Bank will pay 'ПЯТЬ РУБЛЕЙ ХОДЯЧЕЮ МОНЕТОЮ' (FIVE RUBLES IN CURRENT COIN) for this note, with the year '1816 ГОДА' (of 1816 year) explicitly mentioned. The note bears handwritten signatures, identifiable as 'Др. Б. Иллит' (Director B. Illit) and 'Кас. Зинченко' (Cashier Zinchenko), which were crucial security features of the time. This assignat played a vital role in the Russian economy during a period of significant military and economic changes, including the Napoleonic Wars.
