Russian Empire 5 Ruble Assignat, 1815 (1786-1819 Period)

Style

This assignat features a simple, text-heavy design characteristic of early Russian paper money. Printed on blue-toned paper with dark ink, it lacks elaborate graphical elements or intricate borders common in later banknotes. The primary design elements are the denomination, year of issue, and the promise to pay, all in Cyrillic script. Authenticity was reinforced by handwritten signatures of officials.

Description

A 5 Ruble State Assignat issued by the Russian Empire in 1815. This particular issue falls within the 1786-1819 period, a time of significant economic activity and military conflicts, including the Napoleonic Wars, which often led to increased paper money circulation. The assignat states: 'To the bearer of this state assignat, the Assignat Bank shall pay five rubles in circulating coin of the year 1815.' This highlights the convertibility (at least in principle) of assignats into metal currency. The serial number N° 2652394 is clearly visible in multiple places. Such assignats played a crucial role in the Russian economy during this era, serving as a primary form of currency alongside metal coins. Their value often fluctuated against silver, especially during periods of high government expenditure. This specimen, despite its worn condition, represents an important piece of Russian monetary history, reflecting the challenges and solutions in financing the vast empire during a turbulent period.
