Russian Empire 10 Ruble Assignat, 1816 (1786-1819 Period)

Style

The assignat features a minimalist design typical of early paper currency, prioritizing security through text and signatures rather than elaborate engravings. It is printed on light, somewhat coarse paper with a plain background. The primary information regarding the denomination and year is presented in a large, diagonally oriented text block. A distinct rectangular stamp confirms the denomination. The serial number is repeated. The overall aesthetic is functional and austere, reflective of its governmental issuance.

Description

This is an authentic 10 Ruble Assignat issued by the Russian Empire in 1816, falling within the 1786-1819 period of assignat circulation. The banknote features a simple design, characteristic of early paper currency, printed on light reddish-brown paper. The main text, oriented diagonally, reads: "ОБЪЯВИТЕЛЮ СЕЙ ГОСУДАРСТВЕННОЙ АССИГНАЦІИ ПЛА-ТИТЬ АССИГНАЦІОННЫЙ БАНКЪ ДЕСЯТЬ РУБЛЕЙ ХО-ДЯЧЕЮ МОНЕТОЮ 1816 ГОДА." (To the bearer of this State Assignat, the Assignat Bank shall pay TEN RUBLES in circulating coin 1816 year.). The denomination "ДЕСЯТЬ" (TEN) is also overstamped in an ornate rectangular box. The serial number "№ 3539562" is prominently displayed three times on the note. Control numbers '10' and '48' are visible in the top left and right corners respectively. The note bears multiple handwritten signatures, crucial for its authentication and security at the time of issue, though specific signatories and their roles are not clearly decipherable from the image. As an early form of state-issued paper money, assignats played a significant role in the Russian Empire's financial system, particularly during times of war and economic change. This particular issue represents a moment of financial consolidation after the Napoleonic Wars.
