Russian Empire 100 Ruble Assignat, 1819 (1819-1843 Period)

Style

The assignat features a neoclassical design, characteristic of the early 19th-century Russian Empire. The central motif is a large circular frame adorned with a laurel wreath and ribbons, enclosing the denomination 'СТО РУБЛЕЙ' (ONE HUNDRED RUBLES) and the legal tender declaration. The top center features '100' within a small wreath. Four stylized double-headed eagles (the imperial emblem) are placed in the corners of the banknote, connected to the central frame by decorative garlands or ribbons. The year '1819' is prominently displayed vertically on the left side of the central wreath, balanced by 'ГОДА' (year) on the right. The text is rendered in elegant calligraphic script.

Description

This is a 100 Ruble assignat issued by the Russian Empire, dated 1819. These assignats belong to the final series of paper currency (known as the 1819 type) before the major monetary reforms of the mid-19th century. They were introduced as part of efforts to stabilize the financial system after the Napoleonic Wars and the depreciation of earlier assignat issues. The note features a distinctive imperial design with a central declaration 'Объявляю сей ГОСУДАРСТВЕННОЙ АССИГНАЦІИ ПЛАТИТЬ АССИГНАЦІОННЫЙ БАНКЪ СТО РУБЛЕЙ ходячею монетою' (I declare this STATE ASSIGNAT is to be paid by the ASSIGNAT BANK ONE HUNDRED RUBLES in circulating coin). Key details include the year '1819' on the left side of the central motif and two serial numbers: N° 144503 and N° 144505, which often denote a series and a specific note number within that series for these issues. The assignat bears the original signatures of the Manager S. Lavelin and Cashier Khleb. Despite its heavily circulated condition with considerable wear, tears, creases, and discoloration, this assignat is a significant historical artifact, representing a pivotal period in Russian financial history and currency development. It is highly sought after by collectors interested in Russian numismatics and the evolution of paper money.
