The assignat features a simple, yet distinctive rectangular design with a central oval containing the denomination and currency type. Corner markings indicate the denomination '5' with an asterisk-like symbol. The typography is clear and formal, characteristic of official documents of the era.

Description

This is an authentic 5 Livres assignat issued by the French Republic, dated 'Créé le 10 Brumaire l'an 2me', which corresponds to October 31, 1793, according to the French Republican Calendar. Assignats were a form of paper money issued by the French government during the Revolution, initially backed by the value of confiscated church properties (Biens nationaux). The note features prominent revolutionary slogans such as 'UNITÉ DE LA RÉPUBLIQUE', 'INDIVISIBILITÉ', and 'LIBERTÉ FRATERNITÉ OU LA MORT'. It also carries a warning against counterfeiting: 'LA LOI PUNIT DE MORT LE CONTREFACTEUR' (The Law Punishes with Death the Counterfeiter) and encourages denunciation of counterfeiters: 'RÉCOMPENSE LE DÉNONCIATEUR' (Reward the Denouncer). The denomination is clearly stated as 'ASSIGNAT de CINQ livres'. The serial number is 'Série 13066'. The signature of an administrator, 'Labrosse', is visible. This particular issue falls within the period of the First Republic, a crucial phase in the history of France and its monetary system, where assignats experienced rapid inflation leading to their eventual collapse.
