Russian Empire 5 Ruble Assignat, 1819 (1819-1843 Period)

Style

The banknote features a classic monochromatic design common for Russian Empire assignats of this period. The central motif is the imperial double-headed eagle, crowned, holding a scepter and orb, with the denomination '5' on its chest shield. The main text is in Cyrillic, encased within an ornate rectangular border with decorative corner elements. The overall aesthetic is formal and emphasizes state authority, typical of early 19th-century government-issued paper currency.

Description

This is a 5 Ruble Assignat issued by the Russian Empire in 1819, belonging to the series of 1819-1843. The front (obverse) prominently displays the Imperial double-headed eagle with a '5' on its breast shield, signifying the denomination. Below the eagle, the main inscription reads: 'ОБЪЯВИТЕЛЮ СЕЙ ГОСУДАРСТВЕННОЙ АССИГНАЦІИ НАШЪ ПЛАТИТЬ АССИГНАЦІОННЫЙ БАНКЪ ПЯТЬ РУБЛЕЙ ХОДЯЧЕЮ МОНЕТОЮ.' (To the bearer of this State Assignat, our Assignat Bank shall pay Five Rubles in current coin.) This statement guaranteed the banknote's convertibility into copper coin, though its market value often fluctuated. The note is distinguished by its characteristic blue-grey color, specific to the 5-ruble denomination in this series. Below the main text, two handwritten signatures are visible: 'Управляющiй В. Невесеній' (Director V. Neveseny) and 'Кассиръ Волоховъ' (Cashier Volokhov). The year '1819' is stamped in an oval frame on the left side, with 'ГОДА' (year) on the right. The serial number '№ 10985562' is printed twice at the bottom. This series of assignats was introduced as part of efforts to stabilize the Russian monetary system following the Napoleonic Wars. They replaced earlier, often heavily depreciated, assignats and served as a crucial part of the Russian financial landscape until the mid-19th century.
