Russian Empire 5 Ruble Assignat, 1819 (1819 Series)

Style

The assignat features a classic, monochromatic design characteristic of early 19th-century Russian paper money. The obverse is printed in blue-grey ink, featuring a central text block framed by an ornate rectangular border. At the top, a two-headed imperial eagle is depicted. The denomination is prominently stated in the central text. In the lower left corner of the ornamental frame, there is an oval cartouche with the year '1819'. Signatures of officials are printed below the main text. The reverse side features a large, faint watermark of the denomination 'ПЯТЬ РУБЛЕЙ' (Five Rubles), indicative of security measures of the era. The overall aesthetic is functional yet incorporates national symbols.

Description

This is a 5 Ruble Assignat from the Russian Empire, issued as part of the 1819 series. These assignats were introduced to stabilize the financial system after the Napoleonic Wars and circulated from 1819 until the monetary reform of 1843. (To the bearer of this state assignat, the Assignation Bank shall pay five rubles in circulating coin). The prominent year '1819' in the design signifies the type year of this issue. The two-headed imperial eagle at the top is a key symbol of the Russian Empire. The serial number 'Nº 9859829' is clearly visible. This particular note, despite its worn condition, represents a significant piece of Russian monetary history, illustrating the transitionary period of paper money before the full establishment of credit notes. Collectors often seek these early assignats for their historical importance and distinctive design.
