Description

This is a genuine Russian Empire 5 Ruble Assignat, issued in 1836 by the State Assignation Bank. These assignats were a crucial part of the Russian monetary system during a period of significant financial reforms. The 5 Ruble denomination was typically printed on blue paper with dark blue ink. The obverse prominently displays the Imperial Russian double-headed eagle, a symbol of the Russian monarchy. Below the eagle, the text states the bank's obligation to pay the bearer 'ПЯТЬ РУБЛЕЙ ХОДЯЧЕЮ МОНЕТОЮ' (FIVE RUBLES in circulating coin). The year '1836' is vertically printed in the bottom left corner within a decorative element. The serial number 'N° 107123' appears twice at the bottom. The note bears the handwritten signatures of the Manager (Управляющій) R. Khelmsky and the Cashier (Кассиръ) V. Kamyshev. A circular stamp with 'ГОДЪ' (Year) is visible in the bottom right corner, a common feature for these issues to confirm the year of circulation. A handwritten inscription 'Изп. N° 4995' in the upper left corner may indicate an old inventory number. This particular assignat belongs to the issue series spanning from 1819 to 1843, which represents the period after the monetary reforms following the Napoleonic Wars but before the full convertibility reforms of 1839-1843. It's a significant historical artifact reflecting the economic state and monetary policies of the Russian Empire in the mid-19th century.
